This task involved removing hawthorn, gorse, bramble and other scrub so that a clear area is made for a fire break. After another couple of days work the adjacent hillside will be fired to remove the overgrowth. This will allow the grassland plants to grow back as they had been overshadowed. This is all part of the Peak Park plan which is to return the hillside to meadow. Unlike the West Hallam task we were allowed several fires. Because of the steepness of the hill we had one at the bottom, one in the middle and one at the top. We completed about half the work required to finish the fire break, the width was achieved (6 metres) but we only made it halfway up the hill. The rangers will be back with another group to finish off. The day was enjoyable with excellent weather, with the fires it was really quite warm. |
